The kitchen is the heart of every home. Unfortunately, it can also be the heart of every bacteria and germ you can ever think of. Many activities take place in the kitchen in one day which makes it more prone to contamination than any other part of the house. Luckily, most of the microorganisms will not pose any danger to anyone unless they have a weak immune system. Many pathogens can also crawl and hide in the kitchen as they will thrive best – there is food and water already.
Due to our busy schedules, we are unable to clean all parts and items in the kitchen thoroughly. This leaves room for germs and dirty to accumulate over prolonged periods.

- Dish sponges
The item we use to clean all other kitchen utensils carried most of the germs. According to research, the kitchen sponge was found to be dirtier than the toilet seat. It harbored over ten million bacteria per inch squared such as E.coli, salmonella among others. Some of the sponges contained mold and yeast which cause allergic reactions to various people.
To disinfect a sponge is to soak it in bleach for at least one minute. Rinse it in hot water and leave it to dry in a well-ventilated area.
- Kitchen sink
It is quite ironic that clean water runs through it majority of the time yet it contains a lot of germs too. Just like the sponges, the sink was found to contain more bacteria than the toilet seat. Most people overlooked cleaning the basin where everything is rinsed in, for example, meat, utensils, and foodstuffs. All these items that come into contact with the kitchen sink harbor millions of germs and bacteria and transfer them directly into the sink. The situation gets worse especially when cleaning utensils are dumped into the sink for a long time.
According to research, the sink should be cleaned once a week using breach or undiluted hydrogen peroxide. Once the day’s utensils are cleaned, the sink should be scrubbed with a brush to get rid of bacteria.
- Knife block
When was the last time you cleaned the knife block?
Chance are, you have never thought of cleaning it. This item contains a lot of bacteria which has accumulated in the knife slots over the years. Insects could have gotten stuck in the slots and died in there ages ago.
To clean this item, remove the knives and shake the block upside down. This will remove any solid material in it. Soak this block in hot soapy water with a little bleach for at least one hour to soften any gunk that could be in the slots. Scrub all the slots with a brush and rinse it thoroughly with clean running water. Leave it in an airy place to dry up.
- Fridge drawers
Vegetable drawers in your fridge contain a huge number of bacteria, mold, and yeast. A dirty drawer could contaminate all the fresh vegetables you place in the drawers.
You can deep clean these drawers at least once a month to minimize the risk of getting infected. Remove the drawers from the fridge and fill them with warm soapy water. If your refrigerator has any foul smell, you can make some baking soda solution. Before you place them back in the fridge, allow them to dry thoroughly.
- Can opener
This tool is used mostly on a daily basis in most homes. Many people simply rinse it out and place it back in the drawer. Well, unfortunately, this tiny tool collects a lot of germs and could bread mold and yeast posing a danger to you and your family.
The area where the can opener and the actual can meet should be cleaned thoroughly. When cleaning, ensure that you remove all food residue. You can soak it in warm water for a little while to make cleaning easier. You can also purchase a can opener that is dishwater safe.
- Faucets, knobs, and handles
When preparing meals, we constantly touching many other things in the kitchen. This includes the stove knobs, faucets and cabinet handles. Touching these objects when handling raw meat increase the rate at which bacteria are transferred around the kitchen.
Therefore, it is critical that you clean all faucets, handles, and knobs when cleaning the kitchen. When handling meat products, you can rinse off your hands before touching anything else around the kitchen.
- Chopping boards
Chopping surfaces come into contact with many raw foods including vegetables and meat. Germs can remain there for a long time and pass on to other foods or the individual handling the food. Cutting boards that have deeper cracks in facts contain more germs as it is hard to clean.
Purchase chopping boards that can be cleaned in the dishwasher, preferably plastic ones. Also, remember to clean your cutting board with warm soapy water after use.
